Vehicles Purchased from an Out-of-State Dealer

1. Nevada Evidence of Insurance:

  • Proof of insurance from a Nevada Licensed Insurance Carrier is required for vehicle registration.

2. Invoice or Bill of Sale:

  • The invoice or bill of sale provided by the dealer, which includes details such as the sale price, date, and vehicle identification.

3. Proof of Ownership: (Choose one of the following)

  • Vehicle Title: If the vehicle has been previously registered and you have the title, provide it.
  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO): For brand new vehicles that have never been registered, you should have the MCO.
  • Security Agreement: If there's a lien on the vehicle, provide the security agreement from the financial institution that holds the lien.
  • Lease Agreement: If the vehicle is leased, you may need the lease agreement.

4. Nevada Emission Vehicle Inspection Report (if required):

  • Check if your vehicle falls under the category requiring an emissions vehicle inspection. If needed, the dealer should provide the necessary inspection report.

5. VIN Inspection:

  • If the vehicle has never been registered in Nevada, you might need to arrange for a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection to verify the vehicle's identity. You can often do this at a local DMV office or an authorized inspection station.

6. Current Odometer Reading:

  • Provide the current odometer reading for your vehicle. This information helps determine registration fees and may be required for specific vehicle types.

7. Sales Taxes:

  • Dealers typically handle sales tax collection and remittance. The amount you pay may vary based on the actual sales price. Many dealers remit sales taxes directly to the DMV on your behalf. However, if you purchased the vehicle in Utah, you may owe full Nevada taxes.

8. Vehicle Registration Deadline:

  • Ensure that the vehicle is registered before the expiration of any movement permit issued. The expiration date is typically provided by the dealer and can vary.

9. Odometer Statement (For Vehicles 2011 or Newer):

  • For vehicles manufactured in 2011 or later, ensure that the dealer completes the odometer statement on the title or certificate of origin. An original copy of a separate statement is also acceptable.

Vehicles Purchased from a Nevada Dealer

1. Nevada Evidence of Insurance:

  • Proof of insurance from a Nevada Licensed Insurance Carrier is required to register the vehicle.

2. Electronic Dealer Report of Sale (EDRS):

  • The Electronic Dealer Report of Sale is a document provided by the dealer. It records the details of the vehicle sale, including the buyer's information, vehicle identification, and sale price.

3. Nevada Emission Vehicle Inspection Report (if needed):

  • Depending on your vehicle's type and age, it may require an emissions vehicle inspection. If necessary, the dealer should provide you with the required inspection report.

4. Current Odometer Reading:

  • You'll be asked to provide the current odometer reading for your vehicle. This information helps determine registration fees and may be necessary for certain types of vehicles.

5. Sales Taxes:

  • Sales taxes are typically paid to the dealer based on the actual sales price of the vehicle. Dealers often handle the sales tax collection and remittance process on behalf of the buyer.

4. VIN Inspection (if not previously registered in Nevada):

  • If the vehicle has never been registered in Nevada, arrange for a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection to verify the vehicle's identity. This can typically be done at a local DMV office or an authorized inspection station.

5. Current Odometer Reading:

  • Provide the current odometer reading for your vehicle. This information helps determine registration fees and may be necessary for specific vehicle types.

6. Vehicle Registration Deadline:

  • Register the vehicle within 30 days of the purchase date to avoid potential penalties or issues.

7. Insurance and Movement Permit:

  • Before driving the newly purchased vehicle on any public street, the buyer must obtain insurance and a movement permit to ensure legal compliance.

8. License Plate Removal:

  • The seller should remove the license plates from the vehicle and either transfer them to another vehicle or surrender them as required by state regulations.

9. Bill of Sale:

  • It's advisable to complete a Bill of Sale for your records, documenting the sale transaction details.

10. Sales Taxes:- Sales taxes are generally not charged on "occasional" sales. However, it's important to understand the tax implications of your vehicle transaction, especially if it does not qualify as an occasional sale.
