Registration renewal

When it comes to renewing your vehicle registration in Nevada, it's essential to stay informed about the process, deadlines, and requirements. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the renewal process with ease.

Get a Quote

Renewal Postcard

Vehicle registrations in Nevada expire on the exact date listed on your registration, not at the end of the month. To keep you informed, you will receive a renewal postcard in the mail approximately 30 days before your renewal date. If you prefer to go paperless, you can opt to receive email notices instead.

Remember, it's your responsibility to ensure timely registration renewal, even if you do not receive a notice. Late fees are assessed based on the expiration date, and Nevada does not have a grace period. If your registration is about to expire and you need to drive your vehicle, you can obtain a temporary movement permit online.

Emission Inspections

In Nevada, smog checks are required annually for most vehicles. You don't need a renewal notice to complete the emissions test. However, new vehicles are exempt from emissions testing until the fourth registration cycle. Keep in mind that your vehicle will not pass an emissions test if the Check Engine light is on.

Additionally, if you have a monitoring device plugged into the connector below your dashboard, it must be removed before the emissions test. Emission stations are required to fail the vehicle if such a device is plugged in. If you have a 1996 or newer vehicle, don't rush to get it tested immediately after a battery disconnect or if the battery is in poor condition. The vehicle needs to be driven under various conditions for up to one week to complete its tests.

If you're outside of Nevada and can't have a smog check done locally, there are alternative options available.

Additional Services

  • Address Changes: Address changes cannot be submitted via email, and stickers are not sent to temporary addresses.

  • Tax Exemptions: You can apply your county-issued tax exemption during an online renewal. Contact your local county office if you need to apply for an exemption for the first time or if your voucher number is rejected.

  • Complete Streets Program: Residents of participating counties have the option to donate $2 to the Complete Streets Program in their county.

  • Payment Options: Nevada DMV accepts electronic checks, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Using e-check can help save taxpayer dollars by reducing fees. Debit cards are processed as credit.

License Plate Reissue

  • If your license plates are more than eight years old, you may receive replacement plates in the mail after you renew. This helps ensure that plates remain legible. Plates and decals are mailed separately. Remember not to place the new decal on your old plates; instead, use it on the new ones when they arrive. The Plate Cost Recovery Fee will be shown on your receipt if plates are being issued.

Classic Vehicle Insurance

Owners of vehicles with Classic Vehicle, Classic Rod, or Old Timer license plates are required to carry classic or antique vehicle insurance. Vehicles that meet specific criteria, such as annual mileage limits and usage restrictions, are exempt from emissions testing if the owner completes an Affidavit of Non-Operation.

Please note that these requirements are based on new laws passed during the 2021 Nevada Legislature. Stay informed about these changes and ensure compliance when renewing your registration.
